Oftentimes, when people think of coffee they think of the jolt of energy it provides, the push they need to get through the day. But, the magic begins even before the first sip. From choosing the perfect cup to pouring the milk, these steps don’t work to make the coffee stronger, they work to make the moment gentler, and create a grounding ritual that is possible every day.

In a world that constantly asks us to move faster, reach higher, and be tougher, a cup of coffee invites us to slow down, take a break, and soften our souls. During the process of making your cup of coffee, your hands are busy, your mind is at ease, and, for a few minutes, nothing else is required of you. That is why a cup of coffee is a small act of self-care. Not because it fuels productivity, but because it creates a moment for a grounding practice. It’s a reminder that caring for yourself doesn’t always mean big changes or perfect routines. Sometimes, it’s just standing still long enough to enjoy the process.

For me, there is nothing more relaxing and grounding than making coffee in a dimly lit kitchen with everyone else in the house still sleeping. There is something so profound in those first few moments by myself, inhaling the familiar aroma of my favourite drink, void of the worries and work to come that day. My routine of making coffee starts my day and gives me structure and calm during busy days. There is no second guessing my coffee routine, I know exactly how I like it and how to make it. My mind can rest as my hands work their way through a familiar process. As a mom of a busy toddler, I don’t have time for elaborate self-care routines, so I try to wake up before anyone else does on most days to really enjoy and be intentional about my morning coffee routine.
Your morning coffee routine does not have to be this elaborate thing either, no expensive machines or accessories are necessary, you only need what’s familiar and loved by you – your 10 year old drip coffee machine will do just fine. It’s the intention that you bring to the set up that matters. Bring the mindset that you are doing this just for you. You are making a coffee to nurture your soul, to give you emotional support, and to set up your day on a comforting and familiar note. Be intentional when choosing your mug, notice the familiar aroma of your favourite coffee beans, watch the coffee drip into your mug as it brews, prepare the rest of your coffee to your liking. Once your coffee is prepared, take the time to enjoy each sip as it were the first. Do nothing while you drink your coffee, or do your favourite slow past time – read a book (or a blog), bird watch, crochet, journal, anything – whatever keeps you present and happy in this intentional moment made just for you.

Remember, not every moment needs to be productive. Some are meant to be sipped slowly.

Next time you make coffee, I invite you to notice the ritual, not the rush. What changes when you allow yourself to slow down and take the time to notice the little moments in your coffee routine?
